Fencing Studio on the set of the movie "The Devil of Lancut"

Some of our friends from the so-called "industry" asked us to summarize what our work in the film "The Devil of Lancut" consisted of. Therefore we are comming with a small resume. The "Fencing Studio" team actively participated in the recording of two scenes of saber combat - on horseback and on foot. In these scenes we also took an active part.

Scene 1. Group saber fight in front of the Orthodox church

Before we entered the film set, the above scene was developed (in terms of choreography) in the training room. Here we took into account the elements of the target scenery (the pillar of the Orthodox church, the layout of the space in front of the church), the number of fighters, who should cross sabers with whom and when.

Then, after the fencing arrangements were approved by the directing and operating division, we moved on to work with the actors.

During the final filming of the scene under the Orthodox church, the fight itself took place without appointment, here we used the "open-eye" method of fighting, which has already been well proven both in film and theater. This allowed us to show the skirmish in a natural but at the same time spectacular way and in accordance with the film script.

Scene 2. Saber duel on horseback

One of the biggest tasks in the making of this film was the preparation of the horse duel. We started by preparing the horses properly. The horses that took part in the scene had been accustomed for years to what was happening in front of and behind their heads (both the sounds and movement of sabers), riding and maneuvering together.

The next stage was, traditionally, the development of the choreography of the horse ride and the battle itself. All this was practiced in the dressage arena and then at the location of the target duel (open air).

Similarly to the foot scene, we moved on to training with the actors next. We must mention that our actors had some fencing skills on so-called foot fencing, which saved us a lot of time during trainings on horses. After that, it was just a matter of filming. The shooting of this duel went very smoothly and lasted one day.

It is worth noticing, that the scene of the saber duel on horseback, is so far, the longest in the history of Polish cinematography, in which you can see actors riding and fighting!
